AC to DC converter - design for embedded systems

I am looking for what will be the most inexpensive and
small size design for 110 v-ac to 5 v-dc (250ma) converter
for an embeeded system. I can not use a wall-wart but the
110v-ac input goes directly to the board. I also do not want
big transformers in the design as the end system is rather
small (something like a plug in to the wall outlet)

You can choose form TopSwitch which has tronsformerless design and cost effective. ( You may have to use ferrite transformer)

Discontinuous mode Flyback converter is the best topology for your application. This will not be any different from your usual cell phone adaptor charger. You may be able to but one that will work over the universal AC input range (85-265VAC). This will help you power your embedded board with 5V only with the needed isolation.
